President Barack Obama says progress apparently is being made in fighting the enormous Gulf oil spill.
But the president says it's "way too early to be optimistic" about BP's latest attempt to stanch the spill by capping the well and siphoning off some of the crude oil.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Engineers finally figured out how to siphon some of the oil that has been spewing into the Gulf for almost a month, but it could be too late to stop the ooze from reaching a major ocean current that could carry it through the Florida Keys and up the East Coast.

Since we're now in Day 11 of the spill, which began with a blowout and explosion on April 20, we estimate that by the end of the today, May 1st, 2010 -- 12.2 million gallons of oil, at a minimum, have been spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.
